This is a 40 kilometre ride that will take between 2.5 hours and 4 hours depending on your fitness and the effort made. The track has a few climbs and is reasonably strenuous without being difficult. Using the Young Creek ride map instead of turning off South Boundary Rd at Ross Track continue to the end of South Boundary Rd where you will come to a T intersection with Coulson Track. This is 15 kilometres from Orbost and it takes me about 70 to 80 minutes. You turn left into Coulson Track. You will see a sign telling you that you are at Brodribb Forest Park and Flora Reserve. Continue along Coulson Track for 5 kilometres until you reach the intersection with Storers Track. Turn left into Storers Track. You will pass Ross Track on your left and then reach Young Creek Picnic Area. This is 23 kilometres from the start. After a rest at Young Creek continue on Storers Track. Do not take Break Neck Track but after passing the 4 1/2 Mile Track turnoff continue to the end of Storers Track . This will bring you to the Bonang Highway at 12.5 kilometres from Orbost ( 28 km from start ). Turn left and ride uphill. At the top of the hill with 6 1/2 Mile Track turn off on your right continue down hill on the Bonang Highway. This is a great down hill ride for about 3 kilometres. Remember to watch for traffic especially logging trucks. Follow the Bonang Highway back to Orbost. |
This ride is best out of holiday season. It can be busy during holidays. You simply follow the Marlo Rd to Marlo and continue to Cape Conran. It is about 70 Kilometres return and each way can be easily ridden in 2 to 2.5 hours. It all tar with only a few gentle undulations other than a hill into Marlo. East Cape and Sailors Grave is a superb spot for lunch. Take your time, follow the board walk, take a swim or just walk on the beach. Point Ricardo, French's Narrows and Mott's beach are all very short side trips off Cape Conran Rd.
Follow the Newmerella ride map onto Back Corringle Rd. Do not turn off at Mitchell's Rd but continue on Back Corringle Road . Follow the signs to Corringle Beach. Corringle Slips is at the end of the road directly opposite Marlo. Of course, there is the Snowy River between you and Marlo. There is a camp ground and picnic area at the end of the road. There are a number of short access points to Corringle Beach. All are clearly signposted.
An easy ride of less than 20 kilometres return. Lochend Rd runs parallel to Marlo Rd but on the other side of the Snowy River. Access is through Lochiel Park and over the pedestrian crossing on The Snowy River Bridge. Turn under the bridge onto Lochend Road. Lochend Park can be explored before returning by the same route. Alternatively, you can turn into Lake Rd ( up the hill ) and follow this back to Back Corringle Rd and then to Newmerella.

This is an easy to navigate ride as it is well signposted and is on all the tourist maps. It is not so easy to ride. At 80 kilometres return mostly on dirt roads it can be very tiring. We averaged about 12 kilometres an hour and took about 3 1/2 hours each way. Leave Orbost on Jarrahmond Rd and follow the signs to Raymond Creek Falls. Yalmy Road is uphill and rough in places. On the way home it also felt up hill and rough in places.
The East Gippsland Rail trail is a recreational trail and conservation reserve. It starts in Bairnsdale and runs to Orbost. For more information see the website.
