Basic InformationCheck latest emergency warnings before entering any forest areas.
Most of the rides described in this website are best enjoyed with a mountain or hybrid bike. The dirt track conditions c an change with recent weather but are usually in good condition. The signposting is usually in good condition and is accurate. However, there is always the risk of fools performing acts of vandalism and changing sign post directions. You should carry spare tubes and repair kits when riding in the forests.
Most of the rides will be on roads that have very little traffic or on forest trails that have almost no traffic. This can lead to complacency especially on downhill sections. There is always the risk of oncoming traffic. Be careful. A Telstra Next G mobile phone will work from many places along these rides.
More detailed maps can be purchased from Orbost DSE office near the roundabout. The maps produced here are " mud maps " and while drawn to approximate scale do not attempt to cover all information. If you would like to explore further afield either by bike or 4 wheel drive I suggest you purchase a detailed DSE map. There is some spectacular scenery in the hills at the back of Orbost, along the Snowy River and along the adjacent coast line.
Distances quoted are only approximate. Each person's odometer gives slightly different readings.
To access the rail trail and other rides starting on the Melbourne ( west ) side of the Snowy River, the trail head for the new link trail is on Marlo Rd just past the Orbost Camp Park and Forest Park. It is opposite the Snowy River and can be accessed either from the bike trail beside The Snowy or from Marlo Rd. From the roundabout in Nicholson St proceed through town. Nicholson St becomes Marlo Rd.
